Average annual earnings for Irish workers rose by 0.5% last year to €36,079.

Earnings were up in nine of the 13 sectors covered by the Central Statistics Office statistics for 2012.

The sector which showed the biggest increase was "professional, scientific and technical", where average earnings rose 5.2% to just under €42,000.

Earnings were highest in the "information and communications" sector at €52,000, up 4.6% on the previous year and almost 8% over the past three years.

The sector which showed the biggest fall in earnings was the construction sector where the average was down 9% to €35,500.
