Low-fare airline EasyJet said it has reached the 60 million mark in annual passenger numbers.

May 2013 figures of just under 5.61 million took the easyJet overall passenger total for the previous 12 months to 60,048,534. This was 5.6% up on the figure for the 12 months ending May 2012.

The budget airline was founded in November 1995 and passenger numbers have doubled since November 2005.

Starting with just two aircraft, the no-frills carrier now boasts 212 planes and it flies to 137 airports in 33 countries.

"We are proud to be celebrating this landmark achievement of flying over 60 million passengers across our network for the first time in one year,'' EasyJet's chief executive Carolyn McCall said today.
