Aer Lingus CEO Christoph Mueller has been appointed Chairman of An Post.

In a statement, Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte said the company will “benfit from the strategic leadership approach” that Mr Mueller has brought to Aer Lingus.

Mr Mueller had previously worked with Deutsche Post and DHL before taking up his role in Aer Lingus. He also serves on the board of Tourism Ireland.

An Post, which employs 9,000 people, has been seeking to reduce costs and increase revenue in the face of increased competition and challenges posed by new technologies.

Last year it told the regulator ComReg that it hoped to cut the equivalent of 1,500 full-time positions by 2016, which would bring its total job cuts to 2,600 since 2008.

Earlier this month the regulator approved an increase to the price of a standard stamp, which will rise to 60c from 2 April.
