Potato prices up 187% compared with January 2012

Potato prices were more than 187% higher in January compared to the same period last year, according to figures from the Central Statistics Office.

The price of cereals was up 30.2% compared with January 2012, according to the latest Agricultural Output Price Index, however the price of animals was down marginally.

Overall, agricultural prices were up by 4% when comparing January of this year with the same month in 2012.

Input prices were up 8.6% on the same period, with the cost of seeds rising 8.7%, feeding stuffs rising 21.1% and energy costs increasing by 2.7%.

The CSO had previously reported a 30.5% annual increase in potato prices last year.
