BSkyB and BT have won the rights to show English Premier League matches in Ireland for the next two seasons.

The two companies shared the seven packages available, with BSkyB taking five and BT taking two.

The packages cover a total of 154 matches and their distribution mirrors those already awarded in Britain for the same period.

BSkyB will show 116 matches between mid-2013 and 2016, while BT will broadcast 38.

This follows the announcement yesterday of BT’s plans to acquire ESPN’s British and Irish channels.
