New figures reveal that 83% of households now have access to a computer at home, which is up from 81% in 2011.
The latest Information and Communications Technology household survey for 2012 from the Central Statistics Office also shows that 81% of households have access to the internet from their homes.
This is up from 78% last year and compares to 63% in 2008.
It also found that 58% of individuals use the internet daily.
The survey focuses on the use of information and communication technology for non work-related activities.
People used the internet at home for accessing their e-mail (66%), finding information about goods or services (63%) and using services related to travel (46%). Of those surveyed, 45% said they use the internet at home for social networking.
E-Commerce
Separate CSO figures show 51% of Irish businesses purchased goods or services online in 2012 compared to an EU average of 34%.
Irish enterprises generated just over a fifth (21%) of their sales online compared to the EU average of 16%.
