Construction and building industry output down 4.2% in third quarter

The volume of output in the building and construction industry in the third quarter was 4.2% lower than in the preceding three months, according to the Central Statistics Office.

Residential building output saw a 5.3% decline between July and September, while civil engineering was down 2.4% and non-residential building fell 1.9%.

On an annual basis, output in the construction industry was down 10.8% in the same period, according to the CSO figures.

The value of construction and building production was also down in the third quarter, falling 2.1%. Annually, the value of production decreased by 8.5%.

Industry output has also fallen across the European Union, according to the CSO, with a 6.5% drop in across the union’s 27 member states between July and September.

Portugal saw the largest decrease at 17.9%, with Italy recording a drop of 14.2%. Meanwhile Estonia recorded a 14.6% increase in output, with Latvian activity up 8.3% during the period.
