The total number of trips to Ireland rose by 1.6% to 1,949,600 in the three months from August to October - up 29,800 on the same time last year.
New Central Statistics Office figures show that trips by residents of North America to Ireland rose by 14.9% to 337,200, but the number of UK visitors fell by 4.5% to 802,700.
Visitors from Europe (other than the UK) rose by 3.3% to 700,500 while visitors from other areas around the world increased by 1.7% to 109,300.
Today's figures also show that the total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents in the three month period increased by 3.1% to total 1,835,400.
