Trips to Ireland down 2.6% in third quarter, but more Irish go abroad

The total number of trips to Ireland decreased by 2.6% in the three months from July to September, new Central Statistics Office show.

A total of 2,096,700 trips were made to Ireland in the third quarter, down 55,000 on the same time last year, the figures show.

The CSO said that trips by UK residents to Ireland decreased by 8.9% to 830,200, but visits from other European countries increased by 1.8% to 776,800 during the three month period.

Visitors from North America rose by 3.6% to 365,200, while the number of visitors from other areas slipped by 0.1% to 124,500.

Today's CSO figures also show that the total number of overseas trips made by Irish residents in the third quarter rose by 2.1% to 2,003,200 from 1,962,400 the same time last year.
