German consumers increasingly confident

A closely watched survey shows German consumers are increasingly optimistic despite continuing problems in the euro zone.

The GfK institute's forward-looking consumer climate indicator, released today, rose to 6.3 points for November from a revised 6.1 points in October.

It was the second month in a row that the indicator has risen, and the Nuremberg based agency said the overall mood seems to have stabilised.

The survey of 2,000 people showed income expectations were noticeably up, while economic expectations and consumers' willingness to buy rose slightly.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, has avoided slipping back into recession - unlike many other countries that use the euro - but it has seen its growth slowing. The government last week cut its growth forecast for 2013 to 1% from 1.6%.
