The Irish Times has agreed a deal to sell the ireland.com domain name to Tourism Ireland for €495,000.
As a result, subscribers to the ireland.com service have been told that the service will be discontinued from 7 November.
From that date, subscribers will no longer be able to send or receive messages to this account.
They will, however, be able to access their accounts until 7 December "for the purpose of transferring any data" saved on their accounts, Ireland.com said today.
The company also apologised for any inconvenience caused to its "valued" customers.
It has about 15,000 active users on the ireland.com service.
The move is part of a digital content co-operating agreement between the Irish Times and Tourism Ireland to promote Ireland as a tourism destination.
Tourism Ireland will use the ireland.com domain to attract more web traffic and enhance the promotion of Ireland overseas.
