There was a decrease in the number of new private cars licensed in September according to the latest Central Statistics Office figures.
The figures show that there were 2,783 new private cars licensed in September 2012, compared with 2,861 the same time last year, a decrease of 2.7%.
Out of these new private cars licensed, 676 (24.3%) were petrol and 2,074 (74.5%) were diesel.
The number of new goods vehicles licensed in September of this year was 729 compared with 894 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 18.5%.
The licensing figures also show that in September 2012, the total number of all vehicles licensed was 7,916 compared with 9,034 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 12.4%.
Volkswagen was the most popular car brand last month with 366 new cars sold. This was followed by Toyota at 286, Ford at 229 and Hyundai at 226.
The number of used (imported) private cars licensed for the first time in September 2012 was 2,967, the CSO added.
