Irish working week shorter than European average

Irish people worked fewer hours per week last year than the European average.

According to the latest EU Labour Force survey, full-time employees in the EU27 countries worked an average of 40.4 hours a week in 2011.

Women worked 39.3 hours and men 41.1 hours.

Full-time employees in Ireland worked an average of 38.4 hours a week.

The longest weekly working hours for full-time employees were observed in the UK (42.2 hours), while the shortest working week was recorded in Denmark (37.7 hours).

In all member states, men had longer working hours than women among full-time employees.

Almost 70% of employed persons in the EU 27 worked within the services sector in 2011, compared with 62% in 2000.

That consisted of 39% in market services - such as trade, transportation, financial activities - and 30% in non-market services, such as public administration, education and health.

The industry and construction sector accounted for 25% and agriculture for 5%.

The results are based on the 2011 results of the European Labour Force Survey published by Eurostat.
