IEA reports strong export volumes in 2011

The Irish Exporters Association has said it believes that there is a return to stability for the transport and shipping sector.

Figures published by the IEA show the second highest export volumes on record during 2011.

It said that combined with a bottoming out of import volumes, this augurs well for a return to stability in the transport and shipping sector.

The IEA attributed the growth to the rapid growth in the agri-food and drink sectors over the past two years.

John Whelan, CEO of the Irish Exporters Association, also noted however, that import volumes continue to stagnate, and remain 23% below 2007 levels.

He also said that there is little doubt that "we are enduring what has become one of the most difficult trading periods since the foundation of the state."
