Trips to Ireland between May and July fall 2.2%

The number of trips made to Ireland fell by 2.2% between May and July, when compared with the same period last year.

The Central Statistics Office reports that there were 1,937,800 trips to Ireland in the three month period, a fall of 43,000.

Trips by residents of Great Britain fell by 6.8% to 746,000 between May and July when compared with May to July 2011.

Despite the fall, Tourism Ireland noted that there were some positive indicators, with business from mainland Europe performing well.

There was an increase in visitor numbers from Australia and New Zealand and from the emerging markets of China and India.
