Leslie Buckley elected as chairman of Independent News & Media

Leslie Buckley has been elected as the new chairman of Independent News and Media at a board meeting in Dublin this evening.

Mr. Buckley, from Cork, was earlier elected to the board of INM having been ousted from the company's board during a re-election vote 14 months ago.

He is regarded as close to INM's largest shareholder businessman Denis O'Brien, having worked closely with him at O'Brien's company Esat.

Jerome Kennedy, Triona Mullane and Len O'Hagan were also elected to the INM board.

The new board met for the first time at INM headquarters on Talbot St in Dublin this afternoon.

Since chief executive, Gavin O'Reilly, left INM in April, there has been massive change to the make-up of the board.

Last June, the then chairman of INM, James Osborne, was dramatically voted off the board, following a decision by Denis O'Brien not to support his re-election.

Because so many directors have left the board in recent months, it was necessary to hold an EGM today to approve any further appointments to the board.

Mr Buckley's re-election as a director brings to three the number of close associates of Mr O'Brien's who are serving on the board.

Denis O'Brien holds 29.9% of INM shares. Neither Mr Buckley nor Mr O'Brien were at today's EGM.
