Management at Boston Scientific in Galway have addressed workers this afternoon to announce the shedding of 50 jobs.
The job losses are part of a global restructuring restructuring programme by the company.
There are over 2,500 people employed at the plant in Galway.
The decision was described by company management as part of a global restructuring programme - announced last year - to operate more cost effectively.
In a statement, the company says it has designated Galway to be its global Centre of Excellence for drug coated stents in the treatment of coronary artery blockages.
Other types of stents will now be transferred to Boston Scientific manufacturing facilities elsewhere.
The company says employees affected will be offered a comprehensive support programme.
