An economic impact report suggests an international expansion by Irish companies into emerging markets will deliver 13,000 additional jobs over the next five years.

The report was compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit and commissioned by consultants Accenture.

This study surveyed 151 companies which are responsible for up to 133,000 jobs at present.

It found that following a number of years of managing an environment of frugal Irish consumers they are looking middle classes in emerging markets.

That move is expected to see them increase employment by 10%.

However, it will require investment to take advantage of global trends.

The companies regarded India as their most important emerging market followed by China.

It found the number of companies who expect to generate more than half their revenues online will double in the next five years.
