Bernard Collins, chairman of VHI Healthcare has announced that he will step down from the Board.
This will come into effect from September 8 of this year.
Mr Collins has been chairman of the Board since September 2003 and has served nine years in that role.
The VHI yesterday announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive John O'Dwyer.
Mr Collins said "the time is right to pass over the helm to someone new, which allows adequate transition time for the recently appointed CEO John O'Dwyer."
Minister James Reilly has indicated that he intends to move quickly to find a replacement for Mr Collins as it is essential to have a strong team in place to meet the many complex changes that lie ahead in the area of health insurance.
