Average weekly earnings rising - CSO

New figures from the Central Statistics Office show that average weekly earnings rose by 0.7% to €691.29 in the first quarter of this year.

This compares to €686.73 earned the same time last year.

The CSO figures reveal that weekly pay packets in the private sector rose by 1.5% annually, compared with an increase of 2% in the public sector.

This brings average weekly earnings in the first quarter to €619.74 and €911.63 respectively.

The figures show that average weekly earnings rose in nine of the 13 economic sectors surveyed, with the largest percentage increases seen in the professional, scientific and technical sectors (up 11.2%) and the arts, entertainment, recreation and other services (5.3%).

The biggest annual sectoral decrease in weekly pay packets was seen in the construction sector, with earnings down 3.8%.

The CSO figures also show that average hourly earnings fell by 0.2% from €22.21 to € 22.16 in the first three months of the year, while average weekly hours worked rose to 31.2 from 30.9 the same time last year.
