Manufacturing activity increases in April

Official figures show that activity in manufacturing industries increased by 1.3% between March and April.

The Central Statistics Office report that production in manufacturing industries in April 2012 had increased by 2.2% on April 2011.

The volume of industrial production for manufacturing industries between February and April 2012 was 1.2% higher than the preceding three months.

Output from those industries classified by the CSO as modern; including hi-tech and chemical sectors increased 2% in the month of April while the traditional sectors increased by 2.5%.

The turnover index, which measures the level of activity in manufacturing industries fell by 4.2% between April and March, while on an annual basis turnover fell by 3.6% when compared with April 2011.

Industrial performance was better than previously thought, according to Conal MacCoille, Chief Economist with Davy stockbrokers, who noted that last month's release indicated that industrial production fell 5.7% in the year to March but that this fall has now been entirely revised away.

The Irish industrial performance was ahead of the euro area he noted.
