A new report published by Social Justice Ireland claims that 706,000 people, or one sixth of the population, are living in poverty in Ireland.
The report - 'Shaping Ireland's Future' - says the Government and policy makers should acknowledge that Ireland has an ongoing poverty problem.
It adds that the social welfare system is not fit for purpose.
Social Justice Ireland says it is both unjust and indefensible that Ireland must bear its current debt burden alone to protect the interests of European banks.
Its report calls for a new "basic income system" to replace social welfare and income tax credits and also a "broadening of the tax base" as well as the introduction of more third level fees.
