Problems hold back Kenmare mine output

Kenmare Resources has said output from its Moma mine in Mozambique was lower than expected in January.

In an update, it blamed "exceptional" adverse weather conditions and a clay rich ore band in the mine path.

Kenmare said these factors had also continued to affect February production. It said that, overall, the Moma mine produced 116,500 tonnes of heavy mineral concentrate during the two months.

This led to the production of 76,500 tonnes of ilmenite and 7,100 tonnes of zircon, including 3,700 tonnes of a secondary zircon product.

Kenmare said it was ramping up a supplementary dry-mining operation to minimise the impact of the clay rich ore issue on production.

Production was also hampered by an exceptional number of power outages since the beginning of this year, largely a result of an unusually active cyclone season. Kenmare said the annual cyclone season usually ended in March or April.
