Central Bank wants "clearer" financial advertising

The Central Bank says it has asked a number of financial services firms to change or withdraw advertisements because of concerns that they are not complying with consumer protection guidelines.

The bank said it was now "actively reviewing" the way financial products and services were advertised, adding that it wanted to see "clearer, more balanced" advertising.

When advertising, financial firms are required to comply with guidelines set out in a revised Consumer Protection Code, which came into effect on January 1.

The bank said it was concerned about fairness, clarity, accuracy and the potential to mislead in some ads.

It said important information about the product being offered was not prominent enough in some ads. In others, the bank said, information about the qualifying criteria, minimum price and maximum saving had not been included in the main body of the ad.
