Ryanair says it carried 4.8 million passengers last month, down 5% from the five million recorded in December 2010.
The load factor, or percentage of seats filled, also fell - down one point to 79%.
Ryanair said a drop in traffic in December was expected as it had grounded up to 80 planes due to higher oil prices.
