Slow progress on unfinished estates

A national housing survey has found that there are just over 2,000 unfinished housing development in the country.

Housing & Planning Minister Willie Penrose said the survey had found "steady progress" in tackling the problems posed by unfinished housing estates.

There are currently 2,066 unfinished housing developments in this country, but the number of completions is slowly increasing. Almost 19,000 completed dwellings remain unsold and vacant, however.

One fifth of the houses or apartments identified as vacant in the same survey last year are now occupied.

Despite the large number of unfinished estates and the efforts to complete them, the survey records a significant reduction of 43% in active sites.

To coincide with the release of the survey a guide for residents living in unfinished estates has also been published. Minister Penrose said this afternoon that dealing with the issue would take time, hard work and patience.
