The Unite trade union says it has been told by Aviva management that no decision has yet been taken on the company's restructuring plan.

Speaking after a meeting with Aviva management, Unite's Brian Gallagher said the union asked for a denial of the rumour that began spreading last night about job cuts, but did not receive it.

He said the union was told that the insurer was not in a position to confirm any number of job losses speculated on.

Unions held two meetings with the company today after a report on RTÉ's Prime Time programme last night which the union described as "extremely concerning". The report said that between 300 and 500 jobs are to be cut.

Unite represents around 1,300 of the 2,000 staff employed by Aviva in Ireland. A spokesman said the union was aware of potential restructuring at the company, following a decision to move its European headquarters from Dublin to London next month. But it has had no indication about the number of jobs that may be affected.

Aviva said no decision had been made about job losses at its Irish business. The company said that, given the difficult economic environment here, it was considering various options to ensure its business was sustainable and competitive.

"Our review is still underway, so it's too early to speculate on the final outcome," it said.

In a statement after today's meetings, Aviva reaffirmed its commitment to fully inform and engage with employees and their representatives. It said this was the established practice in Aviva.
