US-based finance company Northern Trust is to cut up to 220 jobs from its Dublin offices and 50 more from its Belfast and London operations.

Following its acquisition of Bank of Ireland Securities Services Ltd in June, the company says a number of duplicate roles have been identified across its Irish and UK operations.

As a result, 220 jobs will be cut from the company's Dublin operations.

However, those affected will be offered the opportunity to move to the company's offices in Limerick, where 80 jobs will be created over the next 18 months.

Ten jobs will go at the Northern Trust offices in Belfast and 40 people in its London offices will lose their jobs.

Wilson Leech, the CEO of the Northern Trust's operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa said the impact of the changes on employees was extremely regrettable.

In a statement, he said every opportunity would be made to support those impacted by the decision, including helping them redeploy to Limerick.

Northern Trust has been operating in Ireland since 1990.

It opened its first Dublin office in 2000 and its Limerick office in 2006.

By the end of this process, which will take 18 months, Northern Trust will employ around 800 people in Ireland.
