Mobile phone operator Vodafone has begun sending text messages to its 2.2 million Irish customers, reminding them that they can change the password required to access their voicemail from another phone.

The move follows revelations that the now defunct News of the World newspaper in Britain hacked into the voicemails of celebrities and victims of crime who had not changed their password from the default of 0000.

In the text message, Vodafone reminds customers that their voicemail password is set to a default of 0000. It adds that customers can change the password by dialling 173 from their handset.
