Official figures show that the euro zone's trade deficit widened to €4.1 billion in April.
EU's statistics office Eurostat said the external trade balance worsened from March when the zone posted a €1.6 billion surplus. It was also wider than the €700m deficit in April last year.
Euro zone exports rose by 0.6% from March, while imports rose by 1.1%.
The trade deficit for the entire 27-member EU expanded to €15.9 billion in April from a deficit of €10.6 billion in March.
