The number of new cars registered in May increased by 5.2% compared with the same time last the year, new figures show today.

The Central Statistics Office says that 9,359 new cars were sold in May compared to 8,893 in Mary 2010. Of the total new cars sold, 24.6% were petrol while 73.6% were diesel.

The CSO also says the number of new goods vehicles licensed for the first time in May rose by 29.9% compared to the same time last year, increasing to 1,190 from 916.

The most popular brand of car sold last month was Ford (1,613), followed by Volkswagen (1,276), Toyota (1,073) and Renault (791).
