The managing director of Galway Airport, Joe Walsh, says there is a real risk of the facility's closing down because of a Government decision to end state funding for the airport from the end of the year.

He also accused the Government of a lack of joined up thinking in dealing with the regional airline industry. Sligo Airport is also to lose its state subvention but its managing director, Joe Corcoran, said he was confident it would survive.

The Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, has decided to provide almost €6m in additional state funding this year to six regional airports including Galway and Sligo.

Mr Varadkar said the Government decision was based on consolidating the strengths of Donegal, Knock, Kerry and Waterford.
