The pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly is to reduce its workforce at its plant at Kinsale in Co Cork by between 60 and 70 people through voluntary redundancies.

The company has blamed the job losses on difficulties in traditional pharmaceutical manufacturing, with some of its productions coming off patent.

Eli Lilly employs 460 people at its plant at Dunderrow just outside Kinsale.

Its other operations in Ireland - Cork, Dublin and Sligo - will not be affected by today's announcement.

Ely Lilly's plant at Dunderrow has been operating for 30 years.

The company has invested half a billion euro in the plant over the past five years and says it is continuing to see growth and expansion in its biotechnology and processed development operations at the Kinsale plant.
