Eircom - Broadband prices to fall.

Eircom has announced that it is to cut the price of its top broadband package by 17% and allow some users to upgrade to it for free.

The Next Generation Broadband (NGB) Ultimate product allows customers achieve speeds of up to 24Mb.

The company also said that approximately 20,000 of its customers that avail of a broadband product that allows them to currently achieve speeds of up to 8Mb will be upgraded for free to the 24Mb product.

Customers will only be able to avail of this product if their line is capable of faster speeds and this is dependent upon the distance that the signal must travel from the exchange to the customer premise.

Eircom has more than 300,000 customers using its NGB product. More than 240 exchanges will be upgraded by the end of 2011, the company says.

When the planned NGB rollout is complete, more than one million - or 75% - of Eircom's working lines will be connected to an NGB enabled exchange. By December 2010 the company had connected 250,000 of its lines to the system.
