The total spent by people on National Lottery games last year fell by 5% to €772m, according to the company's annual results.

Chief executive Dermot Griffin described the results as 'robust' in a tough economic environment.

The National Lottery paid out just under €420m in prize money, representing 54.4% of total sales. It also said it reduced its costs by almost €5m to €108.4m, while €243.7m was raised for projects supported by lottery money.

Lotto sales came to €322.2m, while Lotto Plus sales were €94.3m. EuroMillions generated sales of €98.6m, while scratch card games accounted for €153.2m, or 20%, of sales. TellyBingo sales rose by 7.2% to €15.3m.

The lottery company is run by An Post, and its licence runs out this year. Yesterday. the McCarthy Report recommended that the granting of a new seven-year licence be the subject of an open competition.
