Alan Ahearne has been appointed as a member of the Central Bank Commission. The appointment, announced by Finance Minister Brian Lenihan today, is for four years.
Dr Ahearne was appointed as special advisor to the Minister for Finance in 2009 and advised on economics, budgetary and financial policy. Before this he lectured in economics at the National University of Ireland, Galway. Before joining NUIG, he was senior economist at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington for seven years.
The Central Bank Commission is made up of four ex-offico members and between six to eight members appointed by the Finance Minister.
The other appointed members are Professor John Fitzgerald, Max Watson, Michael Soden, Des Geraghy and Professor Blanaid Clarke. Another two appointments may be made at the discretion of the Minister.
The fee for membership of the Central Bank Commission is €14,936 a year.
