EasyJet shareholders led by largest shareholder Stelios Haji-Ioannou today voted against a resolution to approve directors' pay including the salary paid to former chief executive Andy Harrison.
More than 50% of shareholders either withheld their vote or voted against approval of the remuneration report at the budget airline's annual shareholders' meeting (AGM).
'This morning's AGM result proves beyond doubt that I am not the only shareholder who feels that Andrew Harrison's compensation package was undeserved and completely unjustified,' said Haji-Ioannou, who has a 26% stake in the company.
Stelios resumed a dispute with the company he founded earlier in February when he wrote to chairman Michael Rake to complain he was not consulted about Harrison's pay in the period April 1 to September 30.
Harrison, now chief executive of Whitbread, left the airline at the end of June 2010, but agreed to be available on a consultative basis.
The EasyGroup tycoon Stelios has previously been in dispute with the airline over its use of the 'easy' brand and has spoken out about its punctuality, among other things.
An EasyJet spokesman said earlier in February that the remuneration vote was an advisory, or non-binding resolution and therefore could not be defeated even if a majority of shareholders voted against it.
