Small business groups set out wishlists

Chambers Ireland - 'Pass on local government savings' call
Chambers Ireland - 'Pass on local government savings' call

Two of the country's main small business groups have outlined the measures they want a new government to take to boost the economy.

Chambers Ireland chief executive Ian Talbot said the key issue was how to cut the budget deficit without devastating the domestic economy. The organisation wants reform of local government, saying that reports had identified around €500m in savings which should be passed on to businesses in reduced rates and other charges.

Chambers Ireland also wants measures to encourage employers to take on new staff, including a cut in the rate of employers' PRSI.

ISME wants new forum to replace partnership

Meanwhile, ISME called for 'a fundamental change' in attitude towards smaller companies, saying a new government should implement policies that recognise the significant contribution the sector makes to the economy.

It has called for the introduction of a National Representation Forum, to replace what it called the failed social partnership process. ISME said this should include all business representatives, trade unions and representatives of the ESRI, Central Bank and front bench spokespersons.

ISME said late payments and access to credit were still key issues for small businesses, while cost increases in areas such as pay, rent, utilities and local charges were hitting firms. The organisation called for reform of the public sector, and reform of the political system - including the introduction of a 'list' system for electing TDs.
