EBS has become the latest financial institution to raise its mortgage rates. The building society said today it would increase its standard variable mortgage rate by 0.6 percentage points from April 1. This would bring the rate to 4.43%.

EBS said it was increasing the rate because it was becoming more expensive for it to borrow money.

Last week, Permanent TSB announced that it was raising its variable rates by a full percentage point, while Ulster Bank also announced a half-point increase.

Permanent TSB also announced big increases in its fixed mortgage rates last night, while Irish Nationwide confirmed yesterday that it had stopped all new mortgage lending.
