Vodafone Ireland says it had a total of 2.2 million customers in the quarter ending December 2010, with 34,000 new customers signed up in the three-month period.
The growth was driven by both strong smartphone sales and uptake of mobile broadband. Vodafone noted that nearly one out of every two devices sold in December were smartphones.
The company said that including its fixed line and DSL business, its total telecoms base was 2.4 million by the end of last year.
Vodafone said its average monthly revenue per user fell by 6.9% to €34.90. However minutes of use per customer grew to 273 minutes, an increase of 5% on the same quarter the previous year.
Data usage also increased in the three months to the end of December, due to more people working from home due to the severe weather conditions experienced in December.
Vodafone's parent group earlier said that group revenue increased by 3.5% to £11.9 billion sterling and group service revenue increased by 2.5% to £11 billion - the fifth quarter of growth in a row.
Strong service revenue growth was recorded in India (16.7%), Turkey (31.7%) and the UK (7%). But it said that conditions remained challenging in Spain, which saw revenues fall by 7.4%.
It added that it now expect adjusted operating profit to be towards the upper end of the £11.8-12.2 billion range it had indicated in November.
