Retail sales in Britain increased by a modest 0.3% in November from October as consumers bought goods in time for Christmas, official data showed today.

Sales jumped 1.1% in November compared with 12 months earlier, the Office for National Statistics said in a statement.

The monthly increase was roughly in line with market expectations, while economists had forecast a 0.8% gain on a 12-month basis.
