The Irish Bank Officials Association has said those AIB executives who will benefit from a €40m bonus package should defer acceptance of the payments.
Following uproar over the bonuses, Finance Minister Brian Lenihan said he intends to impose a 90% tax on any future bonuses for those banks covered by the State guarantee.
IBOA general secretary Larry Broderick said frontline staff, who were not entitled to the bonuses, were now feeling the public's ire.
He said that an impression has been created that ordinary bank workers in AIB have shared in a massive bonus bonanza. 'Once again branch staff throughout Ireland are bearing the brunt of further unjustified abuse and demeaning comments from various quarters,' Mr Broderick said.
He added that the vast majority of staff in AIB have not benefited from the bonus payments.
'Our members in AIB are now suffering the consequences of the distorted remuneration policies introduced in AIB over the last decade or so, which have given rise to a pay structure which has placed increasing emphasis on performance-related pay compared to basic pay,' he said.
