The director general of FÁS has said there will be 100 fewer staff working for the organisation by year's end.

Speaking before the Public Accounts Committee, Paul O'Toole said 320 staff left the training agency in 2009. He said he expected the total number of people working for FÁS to stand at 1,950 by the end of 2010.

Mr O'Toole also said there had been a serious period of change for the organisation since 2009. He said the board took reform very seriously to provide a solid foundation for the future.

The committee was also told that overhead costs at FÁS fell by over €10m last year compared to 2008.

Officials from the state agency said that €41m was paid in overhead costs in 2009 compared to €53m in 2008.

Some procurements costs have also decreased. Phone costs decreased by €183,000 this year compared to last, while the bill for cleaning reduced by €500,000.

Mr O'Toole said progress is being made but said there is more to do. He said he is working on getting the culture and ethos right in the organisation in an effort to achieve better value for money and effective administration.
