Shannon Airport is targeting an increase in passenger numbers to 2.5 million by 2015, according to new targets released today.

The Airport's medium-term strategy also says that cargo traffic will be a key focus for growth.

In a statement, Shannon Airport Authority (SAA) Chairman, Brian O'Connell said that the plan would create a sustainable airport for the long term.

'The strategy we have now put in place in designed to deliver growth in and move it towards profitability,' Mr O'Connell said. 'Being successful operationally and commercially are two sides of the one coin which must be achieved simultaneously.'

The increase in passenger numbers includes specific regional targets to be reached by 2015: 500,000 for North America; 700,000 for London; and 600,000 for Continental Europe.

The strategy envisages the creation of 5,000 new jobs in logistics and related manufacturing in the Shannon region, through the creation of a marine transportation hub on the Shannon Estuary, and a logistics centre.

Mr O'Connell said that Shannon could become Ireland's major cargo airport.

He also said that Shannon Airport would have to reduce its cost base, stating: 'We have to undertake a root and branch analysis of all our operations.'
