The group representing the national newspapers has asked the Dáil to limit the advertising that RTÉ gets on its online services.

Frank Cullen, from the National Newspapers of Ireland, said RTÉ was able to use its licence fee to subsidise commercial activities - and that represented unfair competition.

He asked the Oireachtas Communications Committee to define what public service was covered by the licence fee and what was not.

He also objected to advertising within the Late Late Show, saying he had no problems with the station putting out the show, but he did object to the show advertising products.
