Farmers - 'Renewed confidence' a boost for Origin

Agri-food group Origin Enterprises has said its revenue in the three months to the end of October was 5.3% ahead of the same period last year.

In a trading update to coincide with its AGM. Origin said revenue for the three-month period - its first financial quarter - was €340.6m.

It said its agri-services businesses had performed strongly, helped by 'renewed confidence' among farmers due to good growing conditions and better prices. Revenue in this business was up 21% to €306m.

Origin said its food business was 'resilient' against a background of tough market conditions. But revenues more than halved to €34.6m, mainly due to the wind-down of a distribution contract with Masterfoods.

In September, Origin announced the formation of a new consumer foods brands company, Valeo Foods Group, through the merger of Batchelors and Origin Foods. The deal was last week cleared by the Competition Authority.
