Finance Minister Brian Lenihan has named the members of a review panel, which will look at how his department deals with its economic and budgetary responsibilities.

The panel is being asked to assess the department's performance over the past 10 years, as well as the quality of its economic advice and forecasting. It will also look at how the department handled the banking and financial crisis.

It is to provide a report and make recommendations on the future structure and resources within three months.

Rob Wright, who was most recently Canada's deputy minister of finance, will chair the review panel.

The other members are: Hans Borstlap, currently a member of the Dutch Council of State which provides advice on the budget to the Dutch government; and former Secretary General of the Department of Agriculture & Food John Malone.

Economist Pat McArdle will also be providing support and help to the panel.
