The Construction Industry Federation has claimed the Government is well behind target in its spending on infrastructure.

The CIF said that, based on figures up to the end of June, the investment programme in public projects was running at less than half of what was needed to meet the Government's commitment in 2011.

The body bases its figures on the volume and value of public sector construction projects posted on the Government's tender notification website.

It said the figure of €97m for tender notices in June was the lowest so far this year, while only €14m worth of contracts was awarded.

The CIF's director of policy and research, Martin Whelan, said the Government's focus over the past 18 months had been on clearing out existing contractual commitments. He said the bulk of this year's spending would be on projects that are already underway.
