117 jobs are to be created over the next three years at the US firm Genworth Financial, which is based at the Shannon Industrial Zone in County Clare.

The company first opened in Shannon in 1997 and currently employs 345 people. Today's announcement will bring employment at the Shannon plant to 462 people.

Genworth Financial employes more than 6,000 people in 25 countries and is involved in the lifestyle protection business, which helps clients to meet repayment obligations on loans, mortgages and other credit products.

Enterprise, Trade & Innovation Minister Batt O'Keeffe said the move was an indication of the firm's long-term commitment to the area.

Meanwhile, the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly has said it chose Cork as the location for its new European financial services centre because of the company's track record here over the past 30 years.

IDA Ireland beat off competition from a number of other European locations for the project, which is expected to create 100 new jobs over the next year.

Eli Lilly's Kay Flynn said the company had chosen Cork because of the availability of a skilled workforce, language ability and the presence of a strong shared services base in Ireland.

The financial services centre will be located in Cork City and most of the new staff will be recruited before the end of March next year. Eli Lilly already employs more than 4,000 people at a manufacturing plant near Kinsale in County Cork.
