Japanese electronics giant Sony has reported that it swung back to an operating profit of 32 billion yen in the financial year to the end of March.
The figures came in a revised forecast made ahead of its full financial report on Thursday.
The maker of Bravia televisions, PlayStation game consoles and Cyber-shot cameras still plans to report a net loss of 41 billion yen for fiscal 2009, although less severe than an earlier forecast for a 70 billion yen net loss.
Sony said the better than expected profit was due to an improved performance in consumer products including LCD televisions.
Sony attributed the stronger performance to 'less severe than anticipated price declines, and reductions in both manufacturing cost and operating expenses that exceeded expectations'.
Sony had reported its first annual loss in 14 years in the previous financial year, suffering a record operating loss of 227.8 billion yen, as the global economic downturn inflicted heavy damage on Japan's high-tech giants.
